Using Pinterest to Plan Your Wedding Flowers: What Every Couple Should Know
Share
I've been a florist for over 10 years and Pinterest has been a wedding planning game-changer. It's often the very first place couples go to when planning their wedding, and it's also where we as florists, creatives, and business owners go for inspiration as well!
But while Pinterest is an incredible starting point, it's not a shopping catalogue, and understanding how to use it, what's it's limitations are, and how you can use it instead of copying it, will make your wedding flowers process feel smoother, more creative, and less stressful.
My name is Annie, owner of May Flowers Floral Studio in Toronto, and here's my take on how to create a wedding flowers mood. board using Pinterest, and how to use it in a way that will bring your vision to life.

What we love about Pinterest for wedding flowers
There's a lot of pros when it comes to using Pinterest to plan your wedding flowers. Pinterest helps you:
- Discover your floral style (romantic, modern, sculptural, wild, minimal, editorial)
- Spot patterns in what you’re drawn to (colour palettes, flower shapes, arrangements)
- Communicate visually when words fall short
- Align your partner, planner, and florist on overall direction
For florists, Pinterest boards act as a visual language, not a blueprint.
Our process for building a wedding flowers mood board

1. Start Broad, Then Edit Ruthlessly
In the beginning, pin freely. Save anything that sparks excitement, even if you don’t know why.
Once you have 40 - 60 pins, go back and remove anything that feels off. Look for common visual elements (colours, scales, textures) that speak to you. Narrow down your pins to 15-20 that truly represent your vision and feel cohesive.
Florists don’t need volume, we need clarity. Too many pins can dilute your vision.
2. Focus on Feeling, Not Specific Flowers
Instead of pinning only images labeled “peonies” or “orchids,” look for:
- Overall colour mood (not specific colours)
- Arrangement style (airy vs. structured, lush vs. minimal)
- Scale (bud vases vs. statement installations)
- Texture (soft, sculptural, wild, architectural)
This gives your florist creative freedom to design something beautiful using what’s seasonal and available.
3. Include Context Pins (Not Just Flowers)
Some of the most helpful pins aren’t floral at all:
- Venue photos
- Tablescapes
- Fashion editorials
- Textures (linen, stone, ceramics)
- Lighting and mood shots
These tell us how your flowers should live in the space.
What You Can Expect From Pinterest Inspiration

When used well, Pinterest helps your florist understand your aesthetic and vision quickly. We can then translate that into a cohesive design that is aligned with your vision and budget.
Your Pinterest mood board is like a creative brief, not a product for us to replicate.
What You Can’t Expect (and Why)

1. Exact Replicas
Many Pinterest images are styled shoots or were created with unlimited budgets. Most of the time, exact replicas or scale is not practical. That's why they're called "inspiration images". Your budget will ultimately determine the scale and specific flowers used.
2. Out-of-Season or Non-Regional Flowers
Most professional florists work with:
- Seasonal blooms
- Regional availability
- Market supply that changes weekly
This isn’t a limitation, it’s what keeps designs fresh, sustainable, and unique. A July wedding will never look like a February wedding, and that’s a good thing!
3. Unlimited Scale on a Modest Budget
Large floral installations, cloud-like arches, and overflowing tables often:
- Require significant product
- Take many hours of labour
- Need structural support and on-site teams
Pinterest rarely shows the price tag but your florist will be honest about what’s realistic.
