The Orchid Cactus is a striking tropical plant celebrated for its long, flat, and often segmented stems, which cascade gracefully like a green waterfall. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this epiphytic cactus grows naturally on trees, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or elevated pots. Care Instructions
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its stems, but ensure enough light for flowering. A south- or east-facing window is ideal.
- Water: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently. Reduce watering in fall and winter, letting the soil dry out more thoroughly.
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity. If the air is dry, mist the plant regularly or use a humidifier to replicate its natural rainforest environment.
- Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect it from frost and avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix designed for cacti or orchids. A mix of peat, perlite, and bark works well to mimic its natural epiphytic conditions.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season. Use a fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content to encourage flowering. Reduce feeding during the dormant season.
- Pruning: Trim back any dead or overgrown stems to maintain its shape and promote healthy growth.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in a pot slightly larger than the current one. Repotting after the blooming season is ideal.
- Flowering Tip: To encourage blooms, expose the plant to cooler nighttime temperatures (around 50–60°F or 10–16°C) and reduce watering during fall. Once buds form, return to regular care.
